Mildred Richters Leavy

August 17, 1927 ~ February 10, 2018 (age 90)

MILDRED RICHTERS LEAVY, 90, passed away Saturday February 10, 2018 at Westminster Village in Clarksville, IN.  She was born in the Bronx, N.Y. and was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years: David Marcus Leavy.

Mildred's defining trait was her will to live. Given six months to live in 2004 and two years to live in 2011, she was jokingly, but lovingly, referred to as "The Terminator" as the years went by. Mildred lived to beat the odds.

This applied to more than her health. She was perpetually lucky when it came to all manners of gambling. Whether it was scratch-offs, BINGO, or the Kentucky Derby, if there was something to be won, you could bet Mildred would be winning.  The Derby, in particular, became a love of hers later in life.

Although born in New York, Mildred spent the majority of her life in Shrewsbury, New Jersey where she raised her two children, Brian and Andrea. She and David moved to Vero Beach, Florida upon David's retirement and spent the next 20 years there. They relocated to Clarksville in 2005 after two hurricanes struck their home.

Mildred loved her morning (and afternoon) coffee and probably owned more coffee mugs than there are days in a month. Add in a package of Lorna Doones and a word search, and she was a happy woman. You could usually find her sitting in her chair wearing an old cooking apron (personalized by her grandsons) and watching reruns of her favorite shows like Raymond or Blue Bloods.

Mildred was a superb bowler, but was also an amazing swimmer and ice skater. She was gifted with a breathtaking soprano voice and her cooking was the definition of comfort food. Like any true New Yorker, Mildred loved a good reuben. And, she loved to tell stories of her childhood in New York, beach-filled summers spent at her family's bungalow in Breezy Point, and of the life she shared with David.

Most of all, she loved her family.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Andrea Leavy (sons, Zachary and Cameron) and her son, Brian Leavy and his wife, Helen.

A celebration of Mildred's life well lived will be held at Westminster Village in Clarksville, Indiana on February 22nd at 11am.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes.

In lieu of donations, treat yourself to a scratch-off. She'd probably like that.
